Dale Smith is @journo_dale on Twitter. They have spent years trying to frame our political dialogue in ways that are grounded in basic civics. Too often we see coverage that gets the basic stuff wrong, or that doesn’t call out when the parties and players are playing fast and loose with the system and the rules, and they are hoping to create more spaces to have these conversations. Their blog, Routine Proceedings, has grown tremendously over the past five years, and is widely read by MPs, senators and political junkies across the spectrum. But it’s been a labour of love that they spend two or three hours a day on, six days a week, with even more time spent on QP recaps when Parliament is in session. They are expanding their digital footprint with a video channel to engage with Canadian politics junkies, and provide some unique content. Because they are doing this as a freelancer without any help from a steady day job, they are counting on the grassroots support of the people who are looking for different voices than we see in the mainstream, and having different conversations than we see on the network shows. Look for weekly content that will alternate between explainer pieces, interviews, and answering questions posed over Twitter, as well as segments that will delve into sections of their book, The Unbroken Machine, and how it relates to issues that are being seen in the news of the day.
