Sixty Inches From Center has been documenting and promoting the art, archives, and writing of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and individuals with disabilities in Chicago and the Midwest since 2010. They believe that the future of their communities requires and demands a more inclusive art history that is shaped by artists and writers who currently thrive primarily outside of mainstream historical narratives. They are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and are funded almost entirely by the support of individuals within their communities and commission projects. Since they started, they have had over 60 writers, editors, photographers, illustrators, translators, and transcribers of all experience levels contribute regularly to their platform, have added to and created over 700 files to the archives, collaborated with over 50 partner organizations, collectives, and archives, and have generated over 1,200 articles, essays, interviews, reviews, podcasts, and videos featuring local artists and spaces. About 70% of their contributors are writers of color, LGBTQIA+, and/or women. They believe that the stories, culture, and work of contemporary artists, curators, organizers, advocates, and writers who do work along the margins are key components to understanding history and need to be preserved and promoted simultaneously. Therefore, they created a platform and work with local archives to provide capsule for the voices that they feel deserve recognition and a dedicated space in history, as well as the authority to be the authors of their own legacies.
