Amber Butts is a writer, organizer and educator from Oakland, CA who believes that Black folk are already whole. Their work welcomes the tenderness we’ve been hiding as we navigate and negotiate state sanctioned terror. It offers intentional safe spaces to name and engage in vulnerability, boundary setting, mistake making and hope. It serves as an entry point into our grandmamas kitchens and seeks to be an alternative to the current isolation of not being witnessed, touched and affirmed. They have the joy of opening up closed conversations. They’ve held intergenerational Black healing circles that support folks in listening, being accountable and naming trauma. They witness transformative relationships and actions every day. They’ve coached Black caretakers in honoring Black children’s autonomy, capacity, grief and fear. They are always learning and Black children, Black queer folk and Black elders are their most active teachers.
