Benn Jordan is making music as “The Flashbulb”, but that’s probably not why you’re here. They have a passion for free music and science education. Over the years, they’ve tried their hand at everything from founding a non-profit music school in Chicago to speaking at events and educational institutions around the world. However, their Benn And Gear channel seems to be the most effective platform to deliver what they’ve learned or explored throughout their life as an endlessly curious individual with entirely informal education. As you probably know, Youtube doesn’t pay well. They do have good relationships with companies, but they have a strict rule of not creating content for a product or service they weren’t legitimately passionate about. As you can imagine, this means that they typically lose money on the channel. Ideally, they want their channel to be more educational, more accessible, more meaningful, and with more professionally produced content. That costs quite a bit, and takes a whole lot of work. A typical educational style video takes about 6 days to produce, and uses over $10,000 worth of gear. A Patreon would free them from Youtube’s algorithm a bit. In a perfect world, they imagine being able to surpass the “break even” line and focus on improving the content by hiring a camera operator, purchasing gear to cover subjects outside of the subjects companies send them, and creating content in locations outside of their home. They mostly make a living off of their career as a musician, allowing proceeds made from this channel to be used for future content.
