Black Oak Wilderness School is providing outdoor and experiential education to Bay Area high schools serving historically excluded communities. Outdoor education has for too long been reserved for students from privileged, high income districts with the money to dedicate to creating and running these programs. At BOWS they are directly and actively changing the culture and community of outdoor education and careers outdoors. They currently work with six Bay Area high schools, from Richmond to Sunnyvale, providing high quality, UC approved elective outdoor programs like Bike Shop, Wilderness Leadership, Adventure Science, Local Wilderness, and more. Especially now during global pandemic, virtual school is much harder on low income families.
