Darci

Darci is an eternal student of history and knitter by compulsion. They started the Knitting While Black series to highlight the contributions of Black Americans in crafts and history more broadly after finding a lack of representation in fine art and photography. They thoroughly research the time period, location, and related key players of the portrait they aim to recreate then go down a rabbit hole making connections, authenticating sources, and finding the most relevant information for their captions. These recreations are a labor of love. It brings them joy to shed light on history not commonly known while using the craft skills that were passed down in their own family to do so. Black people may not have made it into the paintings or photographs, but they have and continue to make their mark on this country. This project is a showcase of those accomplishments. In addition to this project they also share weekly crafting wellness tips powered by their amazing husband Arthur who is an occupational therapist. After sustaining a wrist injury and having to take time off from knitting, they realized the importance of proactive and preventative stretching and exercises for their hands, arms and shoulders. With their expertise they create weekly tips on how to keep their body well to continue doing the crafts they love.
