David Bossert is an artist, filmmaker and author. Having worked in-house at The Walt Disney Company for 32-years, he is now an independent producer, creative director, and writer. His mission is working on sustaining animation history through research, preservation & restoration of films that are on the cusp of being lost, and documentation of them in books and essay. Over the last several years, he has had seven books published including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons. He has worked on finding and restoring six previously lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons as well as some Alice Comedy shorts and continues researching black & white cartoons from the silent era. This is an independent effort since many of these films are in the public domain or will be soon. Several more lost Alice and Oswald cartoons have recently been identified including a portion of the lost Oswald short NECK ‘N’ NECK, which surfaced in Japan in 2018. That film was identified because of his Oswald book and he authenticated it as NECK ‘N’ NECK, which sparked worldwide news coverage. But, there are still 16 missing Alice Comedies, 6 lost Oswald cartoons and many other lost films from the WWII era. The process of researching, locating, retrieving digital copies, preserving on film, restoring, adding music, and documenting this material is costly and requires many people. He’d like to build a community with individuals like you and together they can become a force in saving these films for future generations to enjoy. They each film found can cost upwards of thousands of dollars to restore, preserve, and add music. But if they all join forces, each contributing what they might spend on one cup of coffee or tea a month they can easily achieve this level. Just imagine if you can pledge $1, $5, $10, or more a month, you can be part of a community, a team, working towards the preservation and restoration of animation history. For as little as $12 a year your contribution, combined with many others, could be helping to save these early animated films.
