Joey Rose

Joey Rose is a multidisciplinary artist creating music, film, and live theater informed by a queer and nonbinary trans experience. They live and work in New York City and perform worldwide. Trans people have always existed, but most of us grew up without ever seeing or hearing someone we identified with. Joey Rose believes that through the songs we sing and the television/film we consume, the power of representation is massive. In everything they create, they’re passionate about expanding queer, trans and gender-nonconforming narratives. They deserve richly layered, imperfectly human representation and are excited and honored to contribute to more nuanced conversations and stories about the fluidity of gender and sexuality.Their work has been seen in spaces ranging from DIY storefronts and basements to Woolly Mammoth Theater Company and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Last year Joey Rose moved to NYC to pursue their dream of working in film and television and creating fun and freaky pop music. They’ve been expanding their skills as an artist, taking lessons in music production and writing/acting for film. A deeply devoted student of Y2K pop and r&b music, they create music under the name Joey, queering the universe of Y2K boy bands and making the genre’s implicit gender ambiguity explicit. They are ready to take everything to the next level. They’ve worked full-time as an artist since 2013, acting full-time in professional theater, touring the country with music projects and with their solo play MOM BABY GOD, and have always held a variety of additional jobs to make ends meet. Being an independent artist has been a huge blessing, and it has also meant investing most of what they earn back into their art. Expanding their work means greater financial investment into continued education, tours, music videos, transportation, musical and film equipment, as well as the daily living expenses of being an independent artist in NYC.
