Kahriq Salil

Kahriq Salil is best known for sharing memes, cracking jokes on Facebook, and posting wild hypotheticals to make people smile. They are first and foremost a storyteller, and that brings them to this website. A Twitter thread they made about what the faculty of a magical college for black people would look like went semi-viral in May 2021, and resulted in hundreds of messages from people all over the world asking them to turn the idea into an actual story. They even got a few messages from studio execs in Hollywood asking them to sell them the rights to something that didn’t technically exist yet. It was a flattering experience, but they had been kicking around the idea of a “black Harry Potter for adults” for a while, and they knew that they wanted to do it justice, not just pawn it off on a studio for a quick paycheck. They wanted to create something that people who look like them could see themselves in, something that spoke directly to the black experience, and felt worthy of all the love they received for making those original tweets. That motivation plus their love for all things fantastic and magical gave birth to Mages of Grimstone, a web novel and soon to be comic about a black boy in an alternate universe discovering they have magical powers and attending Grimstone University, the first predominantly black college that teaches the arcane arts.
