Lauren Moore aka Dog Sister is an bipolar celiac artist that experiences psychosis. They love working for parks and recreation but unfortunately don’t get benefits and made just over $12,000 so far in 2019. Their patreon funds their alternative medicine treatments and love of seasonal vegetables. It has made an ENORMOUS difference to change their insurance, which wouldn’t have been possible without the time and energy this funding provides them. LUCKILY they are surrounded by so many resources in Seattle, they have an incredible caseworker and team of doctors that are giving them exactly the treatment they need to heal. They had a carcinoid tumor in 2017, which was discovered because their appendix burst, a silver intestinal lining if you will. 🙂 They spent about a year mostly on bed rest, with pretty graphic and bloody incontinence, and were told by many male doctors that their symptoms were psychosomatic. Their primary care doctor at Country Doctor Community Clinic, their therapist at Seattle Counseling Services, and their caseworker worked for months and it took 3 referrals for them to find a doctor willing to clear their colonoscopy request. And SURPRISE! They’re celiac, they knew as soon as they saw their eroded villi, these thread like structures that absorb nutrients in the intestine, and they began an incredible journey of healing. SO many humans helped them with all their basic tasks, and regaining independence has been the greatest gift of all! Managing mental illness and chronic pain as a recovering addict is a little sticky, because they don’t take any pain killers or drink (two former coping strategies) but they do use acupuncture, mindfulness, nutrition and herbal medicine like CBD to keep their body regulated. If you are struggling with addiction, depression or chronic pain, they see you and they know it is very hard in our city to make ends meet without looking to self harming coping strategies. At the end of this I listed their favorite resources! They’re an UNSTOPPABLE future dog mom, but their next saving goal is actually for a celiac GF apartment. They LOVE living with humans, and have lived in coops and in a large family their whole life, but it only takes a few bread crumbs or a misused utensil to take them out of work for days with a celiac flare. They’re on waiting lists for subsidized studios, but their truest dream is make a living income where they can give back to their community ten fold, adopt a senior dog, and live in a one bedroom near their job. They received a grant from Artist Trust as a 2019 GAP award winner (their third try and they’re SO EXCITED!), which funds a tour in May, that is about lifting the touring process into a more healing experience, but they had to divert a fair amount of the funding to their basic needs this fall. They’re using Patreon to eat well, be gentle to their body, and save for a Spring tour that kicks off on Mother’s Day 2020 in honor of their truly astounding Momma. They have unpaid FMLA to help with their care in SC, and they get to spend 2 WEEKS of december with their mum so they’re super grateful to all the fronds that made this possible. You are enough.
