Mariah Pattie is a lifelong clothing-enthusiast who started learning to sew when they were nine, and they’ve never stopped. In recent years they’ve found a niche where they can experiment with patterning, ever chasing a more refined understanding of how shapes work and how flat, 2D pieces of fabric become beautiful, deliciously structured and fitted 3D garments. YouTube allows them to report their findings, and help other self-taught sewists understand how to better create their own patterns for their own bodies. They also use their graphic design skills to imagine and develop themed capsule wardrobes, and to create historically-inspired custom fabric designs. Accessibility is the goal of all of their videos. They intentionally do not pattern with a dress form, because not everybody can afford one. They use a blend of historical and modern techniques, because not everyone has time to completely hand-stitch garments. They reduce patterning down to the simplest shapes and elements, and they always try to explain them as thoroughly as possible, correlating them to unique body factors so that hopefully their viewers will come to better understand their own body shapes, and how to create their own beautifully fitting patterns. They consider this a long-term venture. Our modern world has lost sight of the freedom and empowerment that sewing provides. Control of your wardrobe, unhindered by size, body type, accessibility, or the changing whims of fashion. Even a small measure of control over our daily comfort and appearance can be invaluable. It takes time, and skill, and investment, but that is what they’re trying to achieve for themselves. And in documenting the journey through videos, they hope to speed others down the same path.
