Michael Chidester is the principal designer, editor, and manager of Wiktenauer. It started as a project to try to organize all of the research that the HEMA community was putting together into a coherent picture of our fencing manuals, and make it easily accessible to everyone. For ten years, they’ve been finding, receiving, or creating pictures, transcriptions, and translations of our source materials and sorting it all onto Wiktenauer pages. Over the last decade, this has turned into a massive collaboration between scholars, researchers, and institutions all over the world.Wiktenauer’s biggest expansion period was the year they were unemployed (2011-12), when they could devote 50-60 hours a week to the work. After that, they were gainfully employed at a job that paid well but left them with little time for other projects. For the subsequent seven years, they’ve been been lucky to put in ten hours a week, which barely sufficed for basic maintenance and upkeep.
