Nitrozac and Snaggy have been making a comic called The Joy of Tech for over 15 years. They have made their living via licensing, merchandise, and advertising. They never liked having ads on their website, (I think they hate them more than anyone!), but they were a necessary evil that allowed them to continue their work. Over the past year, there has been a collapse of display advertising as a revenue source for sites like theirs, and many have shifted to clickbait models. They are not willing to subject their fans to native ads, sponsored posts, and all that other garbage that’s sprouted up almost everywhere, so instead they are asking for people’s help. They hope it will enable them to eliminate advertising, and to pay some bills and update some of their decade-old hardware. A Patreon-supported comic would free them up from the constant need to get people to come to their website in order for them to make a living. They could include the full comic in social media posts and in their RSS feed, and they wouldn’t have to rely so much on actual website hits to put food on the table and juice in the computers.
