Our Powerful People x gabbyplainandsmall is a new initiative. Several months ago during negotiations of a partnership with a brand, the founder shared their vision of how the product could greatly uplift the Black community. In so many words, the brand told them they wanted to put community and social justice on the back-burner to focus purely on the product and that’s what the partnership would center. The founder decided they were no longer going to beg brands to care. If they’re not willing to work to eradicate white supremacy in their organization, then no matter what they do or how much money they offer, they’ll cause harm to us. They went on to create and fund the vision they had – gabbyplainandsmall.com. The Instagram platform that the founder created to help breakdown barriers and create access for more of their people to get to climbing, as well as advocate for the betterment and survival of Black people in a racist world became a website in which they continued their work. However, they are not the expert, the only one, or should be the face of all of this. The founder recognizes the myriad of privileges that landed them the large following and sponsorships they had; why them and not SO MANY others? There are an immense amount of individuals doing such great work, creating absolutely beautiful things, and sharing their knowledge that are unfairly and unduly overlooked or silenced because of racism, colorism, and white supremacy. The goal of this page, the vision; is to share, uplift, and invest in Black/Brown/Indigenous people. Creating something for us, by us. Sharing our stories. Sharing our resources. This initiative is called Our Powerful People.
