Paul Goyette is a photographer working to amplify activism and community engagement efforts in Chicago and the greater west side. Their goal is to capture social movements and community building efforts with sensitivity and deep empathy, in hopes of helping them grow and gain momentum. There’s an element of journalism to what they do, but they consider themselves less photojournalist than photoactivist. Every event, action, or meeting they choose to photograph reflects some priority or interest of theirs, and a desire to build stronger connections between the broader community and those doing the work. They are also active in the civic education space. As the co-founder of Activist Toolkit, they work with communities to build local civic resources, including comprehensive voter guides for local elections in the west suburbs for the last three cycles.
