Raqiyah Mays is the executive producer and host of Real Black News, a podcast that empowers and inspires by giving light to stories that the mainstream does not cover. After a two-decade career as a journalist and NYC radio personality, Mays created Real Black News. Frustrated by the lack of stories in the mainstream about black and brown people, Mays was disappointed by clickbait copy-cat journalism and aggravated that our stories only lead when were on camera bleeding. The tribulations we suffer are important for the world to know. But there is so much more about us than the trauma we experience. This is where Real Black News comes in. This podcast is led by the belief that black news matters, especially when it empowers, inspires, and motivates. Specifically, when it gives light to stories that the mainstream does not cover. Real Black News is not about clickbait or whats popular and hot. Its about lifting whats interesting, empowering, and sharing views and inspiring Black news from those who have and haven’t made headlines – from the US to Africa. Mays has since been named on a list of the Top 50 Podcasts in the US with 1.5 Million Unique Visitors Monthly (UVMs) and was included on a list of 10 Black podcasts you should listen to in 2019. Other guests have included local activists, cop-watchers, and non-profit policy advocates from Black Lives Matter to Color of Change who are consistently on the front lines. Movement leaders including Womens March co-founder Tamika Mallory, Afro-Latina activist Rosa Clemente, Waffle House Survivor Chikesia Clemons, Indigenous rights/Copwatch activist Queen Yonasda and long-time Ferguson, Missouri soldier Tory Russell have all been guests. Mays believes that Real Black News is necessary because the tribulations we suffer are important for the world to know. But there is so much more about us than the trauma we experience.
