Sharpen Your Tongue is a poetry podcast that aims to make poetry accessible and fun. Each episode, well do a deep dive into a favorite poem, investigating the rhythm and imagery, and breaking down how and why the poem enchants us. As an integral part of this project, we will post writing prompts to inspire subscribers to write their own poems, stories, and essays. Sample prompts include: write a six-word story, write a poem made up of advertising slogans, and write an ode thats an owed. If you complete one of their writing prompts, they encourage you to post it to their page for your fellow writers (and themselves and Tory!) to read and engage with. Depending on interest levels, they might offer opportunities to publish your work online, create a book of poems, and receive formal feedback on your writing. They very much believe that learning to read poetry carefully makes you a better writer (of any genre) and a better reader, and that having a supportive community of passionate readers and writers enriches your practice. For those who prefer reading to writing, they will also be posting round-ups of news from the literary world, along with discussion points, and book recommendations. Often, during their podcast, they’ll be sipping a homemade cocktail inspired by a line from the poem. They will share their cocktail recipe, and they encourage drinking your own cocktail (or your morning cup of coffee) while you listen along.
