shea the scholar is Shea Wesley Martin, a.k.a. “shea the scholar” a.k.a. your favorite fat, Black, nonbinary scholar-educator extraordinaire from the internet. For the past decade of their life, they’ve partnered with learners of all ages in educational settings and communities to identify community needs and goals, unpack and address injustices, create spaces of joy and connection, and dream toward a more liberatory future. Their work centers Blackness, queerness, fatness, transness as sources of joy, strength, genius, and magic in this world. At their core, Shea is a scholar. They study systems, people, and movements in hopes of building more inclusive and liberatory learning spaces in traditional (and non-traditional) learning spaces. The Journey Shea is a graduate student working toward a Ph.D. in Adolescent, Post-Secondary, and Community Literacies. If you know anything about graduate school, you probably know it can be a very isolating, difficult, and traumatizing experience (particularly for folks with traditionally marginalized identities). Shea is determined not only to make it, but to make some waves en route to the finish line to continue supporting teachers, students, and communities as they seek to create (and engage in) more affirming, inclusive, and diverse learning experiences. The Fam By supporting Shea through Patreon, you’ll join their “fam,” a community of supporters, partners, and cheerleaders helping Shea work toward their dreams in academia. Your support will ensure Shea gets necessary support for…health/medical costs (copays, medications, therapy)discretionary funds for self care and rest (coffee, food, yoga classes, transit, books/music)conference/travel feesliving and breathing defiantly on this earth as a radical Black person In return, you’ll get some pretty dope benefits including but not always limited to: a monthly newsletter with updates, a curated playlist and reading recommendations; postcards/mail; a limited edition sticker; monthly community coworking time curated by Shea; and/or an “Ohio State grandparents” t-shirt (you know you want it!). mostly, Shea will be hella grateful to have you in their corner throughout this journey.
