Texas Storm Chasers is a group of weather enthusiasts who like chasing storms. They did not imagine getting into the world of sharing life-saving weather information when Texas Storm Chasers began in 2009. Fast-forward to today and Texans have come to depend on them for weather information. They want to continue being a source of weather information during the times you need it most. Many of their expenditures recur monthly – regardless of the weather. Being able to access reliable weather model data and the obtain the licenses to share that data with their audience, costs to develop and maintain their own smartphone app, not to mention a commercial-grade server takes several hundred dollars out of their pocket every month. These recurring costs are only expected to increase with time. Storm chasing gets expensive! They don’t go out chasing storms with just a smartphone. Many members of the team have spent their own money to purchase high-end digital and video cameras. Streaming live video while storm chasing is pretty expensive you can imagine the data charges. They want to attend weather conferences to learn about the latest technologies and the newest research – not only in the world of operational meteorology but in other accompanying fields, too. Many on their team are not meteorologists, but they all have a passion for sharing weather information responsibly and accurately.
