Emily Martha Sorensen

Emily Martha Sorensen is writing clean fantasy books. Their books are clean enough for kids, smart enough for adults, and funny enough to make you laugh. They write for all age levels. Think of their style as somewhat like Pixar — minus the angst, because they think humor is both more fun and much more thought-provoking. Clean, uplifting books are not an easy way to make a living. Most of the money-making stories are dark, angsty, or dirty. That’s not to say that there aren’t clean, wonderful stories that are Blockbuster hits, but for most storytellers, it’s an uphill battle. Despite the fact that Emily Martha Sorensen has been making comics steadily since 2003, despite the fact that they have over thirty books published, writing is currently only 25% of their income. Because they are the primary wage-earner for their family, their writing time is limited severely by two things: a)the need to make a living doing other things (primarily editing work), and b)the need to spend grotesque amounts of time and money on advertising to try to find new readers, in the hopes that they will be able to write full-time eventually. At the $1 pledge level, you’ll get to read patron-only posts, which includes chapters of books they are currently writing or have recently finished, and sometimes other things they never post anywhere else. At the $2 pledge level, you’ll also get an e-book copy of the current book when they finish it. At the $4 level, you’ll get all that, plus bonus behind the scenes posts, and a signed paperback copy of the current book when they finish it. It will probably also be a numbered copy, since they number the first fifty copies they sign. They usually make five paid posts per month. (So if you pledge $1, expect that to be $1 x 5 posts = $5 per month.) Occasionally it’s one more or one less, but it’s most often five. As a bonus, whenever they’ve got some to post, they’re also posting a new re-lettered strip of A Magical Roommate every Friday except for the first Friday of every month, which is when they post the new page of To Prevent World Peace. Goals: More writing time! Actual cartoons, rather than simple illustrations! A page refresh and a new feature at reward level four.
