Joy Clarkson is passionate about the power of story and beauty to help shape us into well-rounded people who think with complexity and compassion about the world. Inspired by her experience as a doctoral student in theology at the cusp of an academic career, she started Speaking with Joy, a brand new podcast. But she also couldn’t have imagined how much completing a doctorate would require of her: intellectually, emotionally, socially, financially. At the end of the first year, she realised that she needed financial support on this journey if she was going to be able to finish the Phd on time and maintain a modicum of sanity. She started a new podcast in 2017, and trusted that if the podcast really were worth her time, a part of her calling, God would provide, and people would come alongside her. And they did. Over the past year, they have become a source of immense encouragement to her, given her a place to more privately (than the internet, writ large) to recount the victories and challenges of her studies, a community of people who have cheered her on and given her ideas. And this year (2020), she’s started a reading and discussion club! Each week, she’ll post a reading, a podcast on that reading, a short essay about it, and discussion questions. The reading will always be small, and available somewhere for free online.
