Renaissance is a poet and among many things, a hip-hop and spoken word artist, as well as, a graduate of the University of Washington who double majored in history and philosophy. They have been engaged in the struggle for Black and Brown Liberation and have been active in the Black Lives Matter movement. They believe police brutality, the Prison Industrial Complex, the Military Industrial Complex, climate change, immigration, racism, institutional discrimination, and patriarchy all intersect into a system of oppression within capitalism that marginalizes and suppresses people, but particularly people of color, worldwide. Primarily, their artistic work focuses on social justice, liberty, equity, and the dissemination of facts through music, poetry, photography, and videos. Their most recent hip-hop video is titled, “Hustle for Life” and flushes out some common motivations behind choices people may make in life that lead to their being ensnared in the criminal ‘justice’ system, hooked on drugs, without a home, destitute and impoverished in our society. Most of their creations address social problems and/or potential solutions to them. They have geared their music, education, and activism to understanding, confronting, challenging, and changing this unjust and inequitable system of power and oppression and creating the opposite in its stead.
